College Admissions Paper

The college admissions paper (essay) can be intimidating – only if you are not sure of what you are trying to achieve through writing it.

Your paper should be clear and concise.  It should contain a thesis which makes clear your main topic.  Your paper should not wander away from the main topic.  All other material in your college admission paper should enter around your thesis statement.  Cite specific incidents which support your statement.

Watch for misspelled words and grammatically incorrect sentences.  Many people make grammatical errors such as using “their” for “they’re”.  Another example is as follows: “I was running bear foot through the park.”  Of course the correct sentence would be, “I was running barefoot through the park.”  Little things such as this will really stand out and make your paper less effective.

Write your essay on a subject that is familiar and significant to you.  Make is an easy subject for you—yet interesting enough to hold the readers attention.  A very good topic may be yourself.  What have you done in your life that may be of interest to strangers?

While making your essay memorable and captivating, you should consider subjects such as these: your job, your economic background (disadvantages), physical disabilities, or traumatic experiences.  Show how these disadvantages have given you an advantage.  Definitely don’t let anyone else write it for you.

While writing your college admission paper, don’t over inflate your accomplishments.  The admissions officers and faculty who make admission decisions are quite accomplished in their work.  Having accomplished a great deal themselves, they can easily spot a beefed-up “phony” story.  So if you write an essay with yourself as the topic, at least make it both interesting and believable.

Proofread your essay carefully.  Make a rough draft to start out with.  Then, when you have finished with that draft, revise it.  After that, look it over again for grammatical errors, misspelled words, sentence structure, and boring spots.  When you finish your final draft, you paper should be fluid and fun to read.

Here are some additional tips on writing a college admission paper:

  • Don’t take on a topic that you can’t handle.  Focus on one event.
  • Write a college admission paper that reflects who you are (in other words, if you are a funny person, write a humorous paper and so on).
  • Capture your readers attention from beginning to end and keep them interested in between.
  • Write your own paper – no one else can convey your thoughts.
  • When writing your essay, don’t be sentimental…be light-hearted.
  • Don’t recreate your old high school essays for submission as your college admission paper.
  • Make sure your essay is attractive in appearance.  Be sure that your paper is error free.

Good luck and happy writing!
